What is the Difference Between Light and Heavy Vehicle Techs?

  • by

We all know that our mechanic works on our car. But is there a different between a car mechanic and a truck mechanic? What about a different between light and heavy vehicle technicians? The answer is that it all goes back to specialization.

Think of it this way. When you are passionate about something, you do it. This is true whether it is for fun or for work. If you enjoy football, you spend time on it. If you enjoy trucks, you spend time on it. When you are passionate about something and you enjoy it, you are more likely to do it well. That’s because you eat, breathe, sleep and work the things that you are interested in. When you are ready to do something fun, you pull out your related project. It’s just normal.

But what is the difference between a light and a heavy vehicle technician? Well to start with – what they work on. Although they may be trained to work on both, most choose to specialize on one particular type of vehicle.

Heavy vehicle technicians work on heavy vehicles. That means trucks, trailers, motorhomes, RVs, big trucks, big rigs, buses, etc. They also might do other big specialized vehicles like cranes, military equipment, tractors, farm equipment, etc. Heavy vehicle technicians do more than just engine repair. They need to know how to troubleshoot and complete repairs on electrical, brake lines, hydraulics, fuel, etc.

Light vehicle technicians typically refers to everything else. Meaning, all “regular” cars, trucks, SUVs, minivans, etc. Light vehicle technicians don’t usually refer to themselves that way. It’s much more common for them to be called mechanics or similar. These technicians also typically specialize in one particular part of repair. For example, they may know how to rebuild a motor in theory but they may specialize in suspension or brake repair. While the principles are mostly the same, typically one shop will deal with light or regular vehicles and another with heavy vehicles. Again, it all comes down to specialization.
