When it comes to maintaining your car, there’s no shortage of opinions. Everyone has a “pro tip” to offer, whether it is your neighbour, friend, or Google. However, not all the advice that you get is accurate. In fact, some common auto repair myths can cost you money, time, or even necessitate expensive repairs.
At General Muffler & Auto Repair in East Haven, CT, we think it is our responsibility to debunk some of the most common auto repair myths.
Myth 1: You need an oil change every 3,000 miles
Fact: This used to be true decades ago, but modern engines and synthetic oils have changed the game. Today, most cars only need an oil change every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. In fact, some may even go up to 10,000 miles. So, it is best to check your owner’s manual or talk to your trusted mechanic.
Myth 2: Premium gas is better for every car
Fact: A Higher price does not always mean better performance. If your car does not require premium fuel, you cannot improve fuel economy or performance by using it. You will just end up spending more money on the fuel. Make sure you follow what is listed in your manual.
Myth 3: You must go to the dealership to maintain your warranty
Fact: This one is another common misconception. In reality, independent auto repair shops (like ours!) can perform all the routine maintenance your vehicle needs without voiding your warranty. Make sure the work is properly documented, and it won’t affect your warranty.
Myth 4: Brake pads only need replacement when they squeak
Fact 4: Waiting for a squeak can be a dangerous game because by the time your brakes squeal, the pads may already be worn down significantly. So, regular brake inspections are extremely important to prevent costly damage to rotors and to ensure safe stopping.
Myth 5: Warming up your car for 10 minutes helps the engine
Fact: This myth has been around since the carburetor era. In the case of modern fuel-injected engines, idling for more than 30 seconds to 1 minute is not necessary. All it does is waste gas. The best way to warm up your engine is to start driving it gently.
Myth 6: If the check engine light isn’t blinking, it’s fine
Fact: A steady light may not be urgent, but it’s not something you can afford to ignore. A solid check engine light could still indicate issues that reduce fuel efficiency or damage your emissions system. So, you should get it scanned at a reliable local auto shop sooner rather than later.
Myth 7: You can’t wash your car too much.
Fact: Nope! Regular washing actually helps preserve your paint. Over time, dirt, salt, and road grime can slowly damage your car’s finish. A good wash (especially in New England winters) helps protect your investment. You must avoid abrasive materials or automatic brushes that can scratch.
There is a lot of outdated or wrong advice floating around about car maintenance. Rather than believing what you hear, you should stay informed and build a relationship with a trusted mechanic who tells it to you straight.
